How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture was developed over the course of thousands of years by observing nature and observing the human body both in health and in illness. By correcting imbalances in our body and mind, acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing capabilities while also teaching us how to take better care of our own health.

The energy, or qi, that moves and regulates our muscles, nerves, organs and mind follows specific pathways, or meridians, which flow throughout our bodies. This qi flow keeps us alive and healthy. If this energy is blocked or unbalanced due to injury, stress or life trauma, we become ill or out of sorts.

Inserting hair-fine disposable needles, and/or applying heat with an herbal technique called moxabustion, at carefully chosen points on the meridians can help the qi become rebalanced and health is restored.

Acupressure vs Acupuncture
Acupressure differs from acupuncture in that the points along the meridians are stimulated either by the acupuncturist holding the points or by pressure from a stone, rather than by the insertion of hair-fine needles. As with acupuncture, this pressure helps rebalance the qi.

Acupuncture and acupressure are suitable for patients of all ages, from infants to elders.

What Happens at the Initial Visit?

The first visit takes about one and one-half hours. During this time, the acupuncturist will ask you lots of questions to ascertain your energy patterns, then take your pulses, in order to determine a diagnosis. After this, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment. Follow-up visits will take from forty-five minutes to one hour.

Sometimes a condition is resolved in one or two treatments; sometimes it can take ten or more. It all depends on the length and severity of the imbalance.

Benefits of Acupuncture and Acupressure

Acupuncture has been successful in treating a broad range of conditions, ranging from severe illness and pain, to just feeling tired, stressed, or “not quite right.” It has been very useful in treating the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
